Middlegate Regeneration, Great Yarmouth

Project location & overview:

This project represents phase 1 of a wider regeneration of the Middlegate residential estate in Great Yarmouth, increasing pride in the area and supporting improved aspiration from residents.

The Middlegate estate is a Great Yarmouth Borough Council owned estate of 536 homes of which 476 remain part of the Council’s housing stock and the remaining are leasehold/freehold homes sold through the Right to Buy.  The estate suffers from the inadvertent adverse impact of previous improvement works.

The key aims of the project are:

  • The removal of existing play equipment and multi-use games area which are poor quality and contribute to anti-social behaviour and an unattractive environment.
  • The creation of a new accessible play area, providing specialist play equipment for disabled access, and sensory play equipment to cater for a wide range of children’s needs.
  • The creation of new high quality, green and sustainable young children’s play areas.
  • The creation of a new high quality, secure and private communal garden space.
  • A new activity walk, to bring health and activity into the streetscape.

Great Yarmouth is a Priority 1 for the government’s Levelling Up Fund. This reflects the need for economic recovery and growth, improved transport connectivity and regeneration and highlights wider ingrained issues in terms of deprivation and health inequalities.
