Greyfriars Project Management help local council transform seaside market with multi-million-pound revamp

Norwich-based project management specialists Greyfriars have assisted Great Yarmouth Borough Council in delivering a multi-million-pound redevelopment of Great Yarmouth’s market place.

Situated in the town centre, the market place is home to a permanent 6-day market which features a range of stalls selling food, flowers and more.

Supported by the Future High Streets Fund, Great Yarmouth Borough Council commissioned the redevelopment of the market place to improve functionality and brighten the area, while remaining sensitive to the location’s heritage.

Greyfriars Project Management were approached by Great Yarmouth Borough Council to deliver phases two and three of the project, providing a number of services to lead the works to successful completion in September 2023.

“The transformation of the area is incredible! It was certainly logistically challenging to work in a live market place, but we’re thrilled to have overcome those and successfully delivered the project in-line with the client’s vision,” says Jon Barnard, Director of Greyfriars Project Management.

Throughout the project, Greyfriars provided services including programme management, construction procurement, budgetary controls, contract administration and risk management, the latter of which was particularly important as the project took place within a busy area with lots of surrounding businesses.

The project management experts worked with a number of organisations, including main contractor Pentaco Construction, Chaplin Farrant, Daniel Connal Partnership, Clancy Consulting, ALH Building Services Design Ltd, Clear Consulting Design Ltd and Roy Sykes Consulting.

“We always utilise the local supply chain where possible, so it was particularly rewarding to have worked with so many brilliant Norfolk-based businesses on this project. True collaboration was vital to the success of this project!” adds Jon.

The new building is a striking glulam-framed, high roofed, larch clad canopy structure. It houses 29 full size market units and three smaller ‘pop-up’ kiosks intended to help new or seasonal vendors.

Following the completion of the project, traders have already started to move into the revamped stalls.

“We’ve been involved in a number of projects in Great Yarmouth in recent years, so we’re pleased to have worked on another development which will have so many economic and social benefits for the people of Great Yarmouth,” concludes Jon.

Greyfriars Project Management provide expert project delivery support across the UK, helping the public, private, education and charity sectors deliver projects of all sizes. They aim to add value to projects, places, communities and the environment.
