A Day in the Life of an MSc Quantity Surveying Student

Are you considering an MSc in Quantity Surveying or looking for a graduate quantity surveyor role? In this interview, we speak to Ellen, a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at Greyfriars who is currently studying for her Master’s Degree in Quantity Surveying while gaining hands-on industry experience.

Many people discover quantity surveying through traditional construction routes, but Ellen’s journey shows that there are also excellent opportunities for graduates and career changers. Now seven months into her trainee role at Greyfriars, she is already supporting live projects, developing practical cost management skills and applying what she learns on her MSc course to real-world construction projects.

We sat down with Ellen to discuss her experience of studying an MSc in Quantity Surveying, balancing university work with a trainee role and her ambitions for a career in the construction industry.

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at Greyfriars.

I have been a Trainee quantity surveyor at Greyfriars for the last 7 months, helping with cost planning, estimates, and tendering across a variety of projects. Alongside this, I’m studying for my master’s in quantity surveying.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Quantity Surveying?

My dad works in the construction industry, so it’s something I’ve been exposed to from a young age. Quantity surveying wasn’t always the plan though! I studied Psychology at university but realised I wanted a more hands-on career where I could see the results of my work. I’ve always loved problem-solving, so quantity surveying felt like a great fit and I’m glad I made the switch!

What does a typical day look like for you as a Trainee QS?

Very varied! One of the things I enjoy most about working at Greyfriars is the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects at different stages. My day could involve reviewing drawings for a feasibility estimate, attending a site visit to monitor progress, or helping with project administration and attending design team meetings.

How do you balance work commitments with university study?

I have to be quite diligent. I’m still getting used to studying remotely, but I’ve found that working backwards from assignment deadlines helps me stay on track. I’m also very fortunate to have study release from Greyfriars, which makes balancing everything much more manageable.

Has there been a module or assignment that has helped you better understand your role as a Trainee QS?

The Construction and Sustainable Technologies module has been particularly useful. It has given me a much broader understanding of construction principles, which I regularly apply when preparing estimates. Coming into the role with a limited construction background, it’s really helped me make sense of the technical discussions that take place in meetings and on projects.

What’s one thing you’ve learned on the MSc that surprised you?

How little some of the basic principles of construction have changed over time. When you think about it, it’s amazing that structures built hundreds of years ago, without modern technology, are still standing today.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned since joining Greyfriars?

The importance of listening and learning from those around you; being in a room with experts in their field is a privilege, and listening to their discussions and decisions has been so helpful in developing my understanding of construction.

What are your career goals after completing your Msc?

My main goal is to become chartered, and I’m keen to achieve this as soon as possible. Within Greyfriars, I also want to continue developing my skills, take on more responsibility, and eventually manage projects more independently.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in Quantity Surveying?

I’d definitely recommend it. I’m not really sure why quantity surveying isn’t talked about more in schools, as it offers great career opportunities. It’s a profession where you get to meet lots of interesting people, solve real-world problems, and see the tangible results of projects you’ve helped bring to life.
